Why Routine Helps Depression
When depression strips away motivation, routine provides external scaffolding for your day. It removes the exhausting burden of decision-making and gives you small, achievable wins to build momentum.
The "Minimum Viable Day"
On your hardest days, don't aim for productivity. Aim for a Minimum Viable Day:
- Get out of bed (even if you return later)
- Drink a glass of water
- Step outside for 2 minutes
- Eat one meal
Behavioral Activation
This CBT technique involves scheduling small pleasant activities, even when you don't feel like doing them. The key insight is that action often precedes motivation, not the other way around. Start with 5-minute activities and build from there.
